Nigerian Army Warns Against Illegal Use of Military Uniforms: A Threat to National Security
The Nigerian Army, through its Department of Civil-Military Affairs, has issued a strong warning to the public against the unlawful use of military uniforms and accessories. The army emphasizes that wearing military attire without authorization is not only illegal but also poses a serious risk to national security.
Speaking at a roundtable with defence correspondents in Abuja over the weekend, the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major General Gold Chibuisi, stressed that military uniforms must be respected as symbols of authority and national defense.
“It’s against the law of the land. If you are not in the armed forces or the security agencies, to use their uniform — whether you love it or not — is a crime,” he stated.
Wearing Military Uniform Without Authorization Is a Crime
Major General Chibuisi explained that individuals found wearing military uniforms without being members of the armed forces could face prosecution. He urged those who admire the military to consider joining officially rather than impersonating its members.
“If you like the military, join the military. Don’t wear our uniform if you are not one of us,” he said firmly.
Military Uniform Impersonation Aids Criminal Activities
Highlighting growing security concerns, Chibuisi noted that criminals increasingly use military clothing to commit offenses, making it difficult for civilians and law enforcement to distinguish between real soldiers and imposters.
“Currently, there are a lot of criminals using military garb to perpetrate crime. If people keep dressing like that, how do you differentiate between a criminal and a genuine soldier?” he asked.
Families and Communities Urged to Promote Awareness
The Army is calling on Nigerian families and communities to discourage the illegal use of military gear among civilians. Chibuisi advised citizens to correct loved ones who wear military outfits casually, even for activities like jogging or shopping.
“If someone you know is not in the military and wants to go jogging or to the mall in a military outfit, stop them. Tell them, ‘You’re not in the army — take it off.’”
Offenders to Be Arrested and Prosecuted
He explained that soldiers are authorized to arrest civilians caught wearing military uniforms illegally and hand them over to the police for prosecution. While condemning excessive force during such arrests, Chibuisi affirmed that the Nigerian Army is actively educating its personnel on proper conduct.
“We sanction any soldier found harassing civilians unlawfully. But civilians must also avoid wearing the uniform in the first place,” he added.
Nigerian Context Matters
Responding to comparisons with other countries where wearing military-style clothing is more common, Chibuisi emphasized that Nigeria faces unique security challenges.
“This is not America. You can’t say because someone wears it in America, you can wear it here. The challenges we are facing in Nigeria are very different.”
